To compete under the new MotoGP regulations for 2007, Yamaha Motor Company set about the task of developing a new YZR-M1. This report discusses the development concepts behind this new machine and the new engine and features developed under those concepts, as well as the new evolution of the M1 resulting from these efforts.
With the change in the displacement regulation for the 2007 MotoGP from 990cc to 800cc, the new YZR-M1 was developed from the three directions of engine, chassis and EMS (engine management system). In developing the engine, with its dramatic reduction in displacement and the regulation limiting the fuel supply to 21 liters, the aims were to increase power output and rpm. In order to focus on optimizing engine character, a policy of keeping the same chassis as the existing M1 and placing priority on cornering speed and functionality was adopted. With regard to the EMS, development focused on achieving an even higher level of refinement in the control functions.
